Do Singing Lessons Actually Work? (And Are They Worth It?)
Do Singing Lessons Actually Work?
If you’ve ever wondered, “Do singing lessons actually work?” you’re not alone. Many aspiring singers question whether professional vocal training is necessary or if natural talent is enough. In this post, we’ll break down how singing lessons can improve your voice, whether online lessons are effective, and how to get the most out of vocal coaching.
Can Singing Lessons Really Make You a Better Singer?
Absolutely! Singing is a skill that, like any other, can be developed and refined. While some people may have natural vocal talent, proper training helps unlock your full potential. Singing lessons can help you:
Improve vocal technique – Learn about breath control, pitching, and strength.
Expand your vocal range – Hit higher and lower notes.
Develop a stronger voice – Gain the power and confidence to sing in front of a crowd.
Enhance musicality – Help you develop as a musician.
Are Online Singing Lessons Effective?
Teaching via Zoom (or similar) works better than people might expect. As a vocal coach, I can hear intricate details in a singer's voice during these online sessions, which helps me plan what we will work on in future lessons. Online lessons work best if the student has a playback option (such as a bluetooth speaker). I send students tracks to sing along to, and while in-person lessons often involve me playing live piano accompaniment, online lessons rely on backing tracks due to internet lag.
Here’s how my online lessons typically work:
Vocal Warm-Ups & Exercises - I send tailored vocal exercises to get the lesson started with a focus on breathing and vocal techniques.
Singing Along to Tracks - I provide custom backing tracks to facilitate the soloist singing throughout the lesson.
Feedback & Coaching - I give real-time feedback and demonstrate specific sounds we’re working on.
Homework Assignments - I provide practice exercises to reinforce learning between lessons.
There are also various platforms providing online singing courses that you can do in your own time and at your own pace. This can be a great place to start for those who struggle to find a regular time in their schedule for lessons with a teacher, or those who are maybe nervous about singing in front of a teacher just yet. The main difference is that usually these courses lack any personalised and real-time feedback, due to the self-driven nature of the process.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
Progress depends on factors like practice consistency, vocal health, and prior experience. Many students notice improvements within a few weeks, while more advanced skills may take months or years to master. The key is consistency - regular practice and guided coaching will lead to noticeable results. Many of my students have extended their range, improved their musicianship, developed a much more accurate way of pitching, learned to sing harmonies, and gone on to form music groups/bands and perform. And a common theme amongst all of them is the confidence they have developed in themselves and in their singing.
Are Singing Lessons Worth It?
If you’re serious about improving your voice, investing in lessons is absolutely worth it. Whether you want to sing professionally or just for fun, structured training will accelerate your progress and give you confidence in your abilities. PLUS, singing is also incredibly beneficial for your health and mental wellbeing. Research shows that singing can reduce stress, improve lung function, boost mood, and even enhance brain function. Singing lessons are an invaluable tool for anyone looking to improve their voice, whether online or in person. Singing in a choir or with others fosters a sense of community and connection, which has been linked to increased happiness and longevity. In fact, studies suggest that engaging in regular singing can add years to your life!
My Teaching Approach
I believe in building a singer’s confidence while focusing on strong vocal technique. My greatest strength as a teacher is tailoring the learning process to suit each singer’s unique needs. I teach students of all ages, and my lessons always include:
Repertoire Selection - Balancing songs students want to learn (keeping inspiration high) with songs that develop their skills.
Musicianship Training - Aural training, reading music, and developing a strong sense of rhythm.
Performance Skills - How to engage with an audience, lead a band, use a microphone.
Industry Insights - How to put together a setlist, get gigs, read a crowd, and market yourself.
