No. Parents are not expected to remain in the room during rehearsals.

You're welcome to drop your child off at the start of the session and return for collection at the end. If your child is feeling a little nervous at their first rehearsal, you're welcome to stay briefly to help them settle in.

That's no problem. I understand that families have busy schedules and that illness, holidays and other commitments sometimes arise.

Regular attendance is encouraged, as each rehearsal builds on the last and helps singers develop confidence with the repertoire and ensemble. However, if your child needs to miss a session, simply let me know.

The fee remains the same.

That's absolutely okay. While performances are an exciting part of Symphonique Juniors and something we work towards together, I understand that family commitments, holidays and other activities sometimes make attendance impossible.

If your child is unable to perform on a particular occasion, they're still very welcome to be part of the ensemble and enjoy all the learning, friendships and musical growth that come from rehearsing each week.

Possibly! The recommended age range is a guide rather than a strict rule.

When considering new members, I look at a combination of age, musical ability, maturity and how well they'll fit within the group. If your child falls just outside the recommended age range, please get in touch - I'd be happy to discuss whether Symphonique Juniors would be a good fit.

Not necessarily! While this program is aimed at intermediate to advanced young singers aged 10–15, previous singing lessons aren't essential.

We'll be singing in two and three-part harmony, developing music reading skills and preparing for performances, so a genuine love of singing and a willingness to learn are more important than formal experience.

If you're unsure whether the program is the right fit for your child, I'd be very happy to have a chat and help you decide.

No. While we'll use sheet music and gradually develop music-reading skills, it's not a requirement to join the program.

Many young singers begin by learning through listening and imitation, and we'll build music-reading confidence along the way. Previous experience is helpful, but certainly not essential.

No. Performances are considered part of the Symphonique Juniors program, so there is no additional performance fee.

Occasionally, there may be a small cost for optional items such as concert tickets, sheet music, uniform requirements or professional photographs, but these will always be communicated well in advance.

Symphonique Juniors is much more than a traditional school choir.

Drawing on techniques I've developed throughout my career - including my ten years performing with The Idea of North - our rehearsals combine ensemble singing with individual vocal development.

We'll spend time learning how to blend as an ensemble by matching tones, vowel shapes and dynamics. At other times, I'll encourage singers to sing confidently and freely, using their own unique voice as though they're performing a solo - even while singing within the group.

Learning when to blend and when to stand out is one of the most valuable skills a contemporary singer can develop. By exploring both approaches, singers become more versatile, expressive and confident performers.

We'll also develop harmony singing, musicianship, music-reading skills, stagecraft and performance confidence, all within a fun and supportive environment.

Yes indeed! There will be opportunities for solo auditions.

Yes, occasionally.

While my main focus for junior-aged singers is the Symphonique Juniors program, there may be times when an individual lesson is beneficial for this age group. For example, a singer may be preparing for an audition, performance or exam, or simply benefit from some one-to-one coaching to support their development.

There may also be occasions where I recommend an individual lesson or two if I feel it would help a singer achieve their goals or work through something specific.

Individual lessons are offered by arrangement and are held at my studio in Thebarton.

Each 45-minute rehearsal includes a vocal warm-up, vocal technique, harmony training, musicianship and repertoire. Every session is designed to help singers grow both individually and as part of an ensemble in a fun, supportive and engaging environment.

The size of Symphonique Juniors may vary from term to term. I aim for every singer to receive individual attention while enjoying the benefits of ensemble singing.

The primary focus of Symphonique Juniors is ensemble singing. However, throughout the season there may be opportunities for individual singers to perform short solos where appropriate.

We'll explore a range of contemporary styles, including pop, jazz and contemporary commercial music. Repertoire is carefully chosen to be enjoyable, age-appropriate and musically rewarding.

From 2027, Symphonique Juniors may be offered every term, with the aim of performing at least every six months.

Yes. Where places are available, trial rehearsals may be offered during the previous term before a new intake begins. Trial rehearsals are not available once a new term has commenced.

Yes, provided there is a place available. Please note that the full term fee still applies.

If your child is aged between 10 and 15, enjoys singing, is motivated to improve and would love to sing with other young people, they'll likely be a great fit. If you're unsure, please feel free to get in touch and I'd be happy to discuss your child's suitability.

That's perfectly okay! Many singers join because they'd like to build their confidence. Symphonique Juniors provides a supportive and encouraging environment where every child is welcomed, challenged and celebrated as they grow.

Each singer will receive a Symphonique bag (included in the term fee). Please bring:

• Your Symphonique bag

• A water bottle

• Your music (provided)

• A lead pencil for making notes during rehearsals

Comfortable clothing is perfect. Many singers come straight from school, so school uniform is absolutely fine.

There are several parking areas available at Mitcham Village Uniting Church.

Please use either:

• the basketball court car park at the rear of the property (via Smith Dorrien Street), or

• the Torrens Street car park.

Where possible, please leave the Princes Road car park available for elderly and less mobile members of The Barton Singers, whose rehearsal begins at 5:30 pm immediately after Symphonique Juniors.

No. Symphonique Juniors follows the South Australian school term calendar.

Yes. Families are welcome to enrol one term at a time.

I encourage all singers to complete the full term before deciding. It often takes a few rehearsals to settle in, make friends and become familiar with the music and rehearsal style.

If a rehearsal needs to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, families will be notified as soon as possible.

Yes, where appropriate, I will do my best to provide a suitable alternative leader or make-up session.

Yes. Depending on the repertoire and upcoming performances, rehearsals may include microphone technique, stagecraft and performance skills to help singers feel confident on stage.

Yes. Harmony singing is a central part of Symphonique Juniors, and singers will also develop music-reading skills over time. Previous music-reading experience is helpful but not required.
